Challenges and opportunities in the recovery of valuable compounds from agri-food waste biomass

Activity: Talk or presentation typesInvited talk

22/05/2025

The agri-food sector generates significant amounts of waste both on farms and during the processing of plant materials into final products. It is estimated that over 1.3 to 1.6 billion tonnes of food are discarded globally each year, with an economic cost of around $1 trillion. Moreover, there is limited information on plant material following pruning (e.g., leaves, stalks, etc.). This waste poses serious social and environmental challenges, but also represents a valuable source for producing added-value molecules.
