General Performance and Hidden Transcripts in Tom McCarthy’s Satin Island (2015): A Dialogue

Activity: Talk or presentation typesInvited talk

2/05/2019

Tom McCarthy’s most recent novel Satin Island (2015) has been described as inducing ‘the powerful urge to throw it across the room, then the powerful urge to pick it up to read again’ (Duncan White). In this dialogical event we approach the work from two conceptually distinct angles. Stephan Besser takes the route through an analysis of ‘general performance’, including the measures of work place performance in the post-Fordist corporation and reflections of artistic performance and Situationism in the novel. Cornelia Gräbner approaches Satin Island by deciphering and exposing hidden transcripts of acquiescence to the post-Fordist status quo and its imposition of the TINA ideology. During the event each will present their approach and some of its interpretative and ideological consequences; the presentation will be followed by a debate
