Sara Wasson interviewed for ‘Twilight forever: how superfans kept the vampire critics at bay’, The Guardian (6 November 2018). As part of a ten year retrospective on the Twilight phenomenon, I was interviewed by Tom Beasly about fan responses to the franchise, and the degree to which fans engaged with the text in unpredictable ways. I observes that, although the Twilight books and movies were regressive in their politics, some fans used Meyer’s work to engage with social issues in ways that were often more compelling than the original texts. I was cited at length, including saying: “There’s a lot to hate about Twilight, but there’s a lot to love about the way fans responded to it. Fans are never passive and never predictable. Fan communities are very varied and interesting and they can never be over-simplified to impressionable blobs absorbing cultural artefacts and their messages uncritically. They tend to be active and curious and creative themselves.”
