‘I’ll never be a Dad’: (un)therapeutic encounters with nature
Activity: Talk or presentation types › Oral presentation
Through exploring my experiences of nature whilst out running and walking and my accompanying childlessness grief I became aware of the variation in the impact on my wellbeing. For depending on how well I was attuned to my emotions and intentions present, whilst some impacts appeared beneficial, for example, gains to physical fitness, to getting away, these where overwhelmed by both my emotional distress and my response to it, which depleted the quality of my relationship with nature. This ruptured relationship compounded my sense of isolation and failure as a man, through the development of a fear of the natural space, which negatively impacted on my wellbeing, that no improvement to fitness could make up for.
As such, I suggest the complexities of a person’s relationship with nature includes a person’s context, emotional awareness, intentions, and their attunement to these. These factors may influence how a person approaches spending time in nature, as well as the aspects of wellbeing which are attended to and if the wellbeing that emerges from the encounters has a beneficial affect or not.
