The Power of Images and Their Many Lives
Dr Agata Fijalkowski
A description of the seminar:
Different narratives emanate from a photograph that can then be set in a specific legal, historical, political and/or social landscape. The experience that the viewer has with the 'awareness' of the image 'having-been-there' shows how the question of meaning and truth in a photograph is multifaceted and thorny. Law also possesses a visual dimension and is understood as a performative language. In this project I explore what factors, internal and external to the photograph itself, gives the image its meaning. The images I am concerned with are photographs of trials carried out in Eastern Europe and the Balkans in the period 1946-1957. Several of these images have many lives and can provoke important questions about the law and its limitations.
