Night Travels: the alternative history of the nocturnal city

Lancaster University’s programme, After dark: sleep and sleeplessness in the modern world is concerned with the most universal – and sometimes elusive – of human activities: sleep. Talks, creative writing workshops, night walks and film screenings will showcase state-of-the-art research on how sleep has been imagined, represented and regulated over time. As part of the programme, Nick Dunn led members of the public on a 90 minute nightwalk through the city of Lancaster. Billed as part lecture and part theatrical performance, the event was focused on revealing the alternative history of the nocturnal city, discovering secret pockets of space, and explaining how industrialisation and the dynamics and processes that have shaped the contemporary city have changed our attitudes to sleep and darkness. The nightwalk also introduced participants to new ways of experiencing and understanding architecture and the urban landscape, which forms part of Nick's ongoing research into cities at night and is the subject of one of his forthcoming books.
