A lecture by Maryam Ghorbankarimi on Jafar Panahii, the flaneur of Iranian Cinema
Jafar Panahi, one of the most prominent Iranian filmmakers, has defied all the obstacles, imprisonments and bans and has made some of the most observant and socially realistic films ever made in Iran. Panahi along with other notable Iranian directors such as Abbas Kiarostami and Rakhshan Banietemad is a pioneer in New Iranian cinema. In this lecture I will take you on a journey with Panahi around Tehran, on foot, on a motorcycle or in a car to see Iranian society and its peripheries through his magnificent lens. We will look at his early films to his latest film 3 Faces , focusing on his unique traits and style. This lecture, while offering an auteuristic reading of his films, will also demonstrate the significant role he has played in depicting a fuller and a more nuanced representation of women in Iranian cinema.
