Mimi Sheller heads new Mobilities Research and Policy Centre

We are very pleased to announce that Mimi Sheller is now Director of the new Mobilities Research and Policy Center at Drexel University, the first of its kind in the USA. She will also be Professor of Sociology in the Department of Culture and Communication, http://www.drexel.edu/coas/culturecomm/. In addition to a regular schedule of Mobilities Seminars, details of several special upcoming events will be available soon on our website (currently under construction). Please save the date for the launch of the Mobilities Research and Policy Center at Drexel University, planned for Monday, April 19th, 2010. Distinguished Professor John Urry of Lancaster University (UK) and Professor Ole Jensen of Aalborg University (Denmark) will be keynote speakers. We also plan to host the second annual conference of the newly formed Pan-American Mobilities Network, in Spring 2011. This international conference will coincide with a series of art exhibitions, film screenings, and other events across Philadelphia concerned with themes of mobility, place in motion, movement/stillness and locative media in urban space.

Mimi will also continue in herrole as co-editor of the "Mobilities" journal, which will be expanding to four issues per year in 2010 and will be hosting a Mobilities lecture by Professor Stephen Graham, followed by a reception, at the annual meeting of the American Association of Geographers in Washington, D.C., in April 2010.We hope to see some of you there, and if you can extend your visit please come to Drexel University in Philadelphia immediately after the conference for the launch ofthe new center on April 19th.
