Press/Media: Research
My new book 'Literacy and education: policy, practice and public opinion' (Routledge) has just been published by Routledge. The book deals with what can only be called a 'perennial hot topic' in Britain and other English-speaking coutries: how to teach children to read and write. In the book, I look at literacy policy (in Britain, North American and Australia), at media debates about literacy and compare these with how I experienced teaching and learning in one primary school. The book addresses in particular the longstanding controversy about the role of phonics in literacy teaching.
