Victoria County History Project: A Feasibility Study, December 2006-January 2007

Press/Media: Research

Description

We would like to hear from local and family historians in Cumbria and Lancashire...

The History Department is looking into the feasibility of a new Victoria County History (VCH) project for Cumbria and Lancashire, on behalf of The Victoria County History (at the Institute of Historical Research, London). Since its foundation in 1899, The Victoria County History has been creating an encyclopaedic history of England's counties. The famous red books are a vital resource for local historians and community heritage projects. However, coverage of the North West's counties is incomplete and in need of updating. But before a revival of VCH work in the area can be considered, we need to determine the level of local interest and determine whether - in the event of a successful funding bid - there would be a sufficient number of volunteer local historians to assist in supervised field-work, documentary research and writing. Please get in touch if you and/or your local history group would be interested.
