Dr Andy Pickard

Formerly at Lancaster University

My Role

Andy is the manager of the Centre for Global Eco-Innovation.  The centre unites the expertise, resources and global contacts of Lancaster University, University of Liverpool and Inventya Ltd to develop new Eco-Innovative products and services in collaboration with ambitious Northwest businesses.  The aim is to link businesses with the internationally renowned research base and expertise available within the universities to facilitate the development of new products which by use of their design, production, use, re-use or disposal deliver quantifiable environment improvements.

Andy works in the Enterprise & Business Partnerships Team which is based in LEC, although the centre works across 11 departments at the two universities.   It supports 50 long term collaborative research projects which graduate researchers undertake these collaborations as the basis of a three year PhD programme of study supported by senior academic members of staff.  The centre has a strong focus on international markets and a number of the graduates are from outside the UK.

The centre also provides opportunities for businesses to undertake shorter pieces of work delivered through student projects or internships in which a student will work with the business to address a practical and commercial problem.

Prior to working at the University, Andy worked in business development roles, helping to support regeneration and business growth for the Department of Food & Rural Affairs (DEFRA), and the Regional Development Agency.  He has also sent many years working in business for various companies including in the fields of textiles, packaging, leisure, manufacturing and retail.

LEC is committed to working with businesses to address real world issues.  Working with businesses and external partners allows students to develop skills which enhance their employability and provides new insights and opportunities.
