My research aims to elucidate the mechanisms that cause tipburn of lettuce. I am combining physiological and biochemical techniques to investigate how localised Calcium deficiencies can stimulate tipburn induction and whether the symptoms are mediated by oxidative stress. The incentive for my research was generated while working on a vertical farming system, designed for urban agriculture. I identified tipburn as key limitation of crop productivity and quality of crops grown within the system. I aspire to develop novel methods for improving crop productivity, quality and resource use efficiency in hydroponic systems, contributing to the rapidly emerging field of urban agriculture.
