Research Interests

Professor George A. Aggidis PhD, MSc, BEng(Hons), CEng, CMarEng, Eur Ing, MASME, FIMarEST, FEI, FIMechE, FIET, is Professor and Head of Energy Engineering in the Engineering Department of the Faculty of Science and Technology at Lancaster University, UK, and Director of the Lancaster University Renewable Energy Group & Fluid Machinery Group.

His previous career included 25 years industrial and academic experience, of which 9 years were abroad. He started his engineering career with Mather & Platt Ltd, Manchester, UK, followed by appointments both in the UK and abroad. His final position in industry was Director and Engineering Development Manager for the Fluid Machinery, and Hydropower UK company, Gilbert Gilkes & Gordon Ltd. He has research, design, development and patent contributions in the field of fluid machinery, and renewable energy, developed turbines for hydro power generation projects and has physical research prototypes of fluid machinery operating successfully worldwide.

Leads the water renewables research activities of the Engineering department at Lancaster University (generic and applied research on wave energy, tidal power and hydro power). His main research interests lie in the areas of Renewable Energy, Fluid Machinery and Energy Policy. Specifically in the fields of Wave Energy, Tidal Power, Hydro Power, Hydraulic design, Centrifugal pumps, Water Turbines, Energy Efficiency, Computational Fluid Dynamics, Materials for Fluid Machinery and Energy Policy.

He has been co-founder and Board member of the Joule Centre for Energy Research and Development, co-Director of the Centre for Sustainable Energy (Lancaster Environment Centre), Board member of the Steering Committee for Energy Lancaster and Founding Chair of the North West Tidal Energy Group (NWTEG). Referee for the Research Councils, Professional Institutions (IMechE, IET, ICE, CIWEM), Carbon Trust, Hong Kong Government, Canadian Government and EU.

A lead partner on the EPSRC Supergen Marine research consortia, and principal investigator on the Joule Centre for Energy Hydro Resource Model Project and the WRASPA Wave Energy Convertor Research Awards. Other projects that he has been involved with include the European Commission FP6 award for the Co-ordinated Action on Ocean Energy and the Carbon Trust Marine Energy Challenge for PS Frog.

He is Fellow of the Institution of Marine Engineering Science and Technology, Fellow of the Energy Institute, Fellow of the Institute Of Engineering and Technology, Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Board member of its FMG, and a Board of Governors member of the Joule Centre for Energy. He is a Chartered Engineer and a Chartered Marine Engineer, a Member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, Registered with the European Federation of National Engineering Associations (FEANI) as a European Engineer (Eur Ing), Registered Mechanical Engineer (REng), Athens, Greece, Full Member of the Greek Technical Chambers TEE, Member of the British Hydropower Association (BHA), and Founding Member of the European Union Ocean Energy Association (EUOEA).
