Research overview

I am Associate Dean for Engagement in Lancaster University Management School, the strategic academic lead for engagement and executive education.  My area of expertise is in professional and organisational learning and in integrating higher education with the requirements of work. I am a Principal Fellow of the UK Higher Education Academy and a Chartered Fellow of the Institute of Personnel and Development.

I introduced an innovative new educational model at Lancaster for professional learners and their organisations.  The model differs from traditional academic provision in terms of student profile, multiple stakeholder involvement and pedagogy.  Rather than a set curriculum, Masters' degrees are flexible and negotiated to meet the student’s needs, the employer’s business needs and the University’s requirements.  Courses widen access, award credit for prior experiential learning, foster learning through the experience of work and develop organisations as well as individuals through changes to practice.

I have led the development of specialist sectoral degrees and highly customised accredited programmes for organisations through building strategic partnerships regionally, nationally and internationally. I have provided advice and consultancy to many external agencies, organisations and businesses, including government departments and the NHS and lead on the Centre for Health Futures in LUMS.

I have supported initiatives within the University related to employability, digital education, inclusivity and internationalisation and am a member of University Leadership Group and committees for Education, Enterprise and Engagement.
