Research overview

I research how theories of identity and difference should impact our political theory, particularly democratic theory. My current research centres on arguing how a relational and contextual, rather than a merely structural, understanding of social identity is necessary for democratic theory. I am interested in how social identities provide a basis for political organisation and political groups. I aim to show how including such considerations strengthens political theory, as well as giving it purchase on many current political debates—given these debates often centre on the social identity underpinnings of political decisions and actions.
