My PhD research is focused on how ‘domestic violence’, a form of gender-based violence is named and responded to in emergency department health consultations. I examine how ‘domestic violence’ (as opposed to alternate framings of violence) may be constructed during health consultations and the difference that naming interpersonal violence in particular ways makes to health care trajectories and health data. I am interested in the health consequences of gender-based violence, the planes (and anomalies) of classifications of violence, and the significance (at different levels of health systems) of alternate framings of interpersonal violence.
