Toby Kingsman

Profile

I graduated from the University of Birmingham in the summer of 2015 where I received an MSci in Theoretical Physics and Applied Mathematics. During my degree I realised that I wanted to focus more on areas of mathematics that had direct real life applications, which led me to towards the fields of Statistics and Operational Research.

I took part in the STOR-i internship in 2014, which helped me gain an insight into doing independent research. The project I worked on involved analysing the performance of algorithms designed to optimally stack together computer chips. My enjoyment of this led to me apply to the full programme.

My current PhD research focus is concerned with trying to find efficient ways of scheduling maintenance activities for offshore wind farms. This is complicated by the fact that it will not always be possible to access the wind farm especially when the weather and sea conditions are bad. My supervisors from Lancaster are Dr Burak Boyaci and Jonathan Tawn. This work is being done in partnership with JBA where my industry supervisors Mark Lawless and Richard Lines both work.
