Abstract

Abstract

Previous research has focused on national culture as a determinant of entrepreneurship. However, little is known regarding the effect of national culture on modes of entry into entrepreneurship (e.g., starting versus taking over a business). Following an aggregate trait perspective, we hypothesize that individualism and masculinity favor starting a business whereas uncertainty avoidance and power distance favor taking over a business. Using a unique data set from 3,489 individuals in 34 countries, cross-level analysis supports our hypotheses regarding the effects of individualism and uncertainty avoidance. We discuss the implications of our findings for theory and practice.
