Abstract

Mobile phones offer unique possibilities for creating games aimed at attracting demographics not currently catered for by the traditional console market. Despite the pervasiveness and rich features of current mobile phones, mobile games have failed to reach even the lowest estimates of expected revenues. Thus, there is a growing call for greater innovation within the industry and this is achieved only by moving from treating mobile phones as resource-constrained computers to embracing their unique qualities. Mixed-reality gaming on mobile phones is such genre that takes advantage of these properties. In this paper we present a novel mixed-reality game which can be regarded as location agnostic that uses the most common feature on mobile phones: the camera. The game uses specially designed coloured-tags, which are worn by the players, and advanced colour tracking software running on a camera phone, to create a novel first person shootem-up with innovative game interactions and play.
