Abstract

Automatic control strategies exploiting the True Digital Control (TDC) approach to control system design are applied to a nonlinear Statistical Traffic Model (STM) of the Amsterdam ring road system. The adaptive Proportional-Integral-Plus (PIP) control system based on Non-Minimum State Space (NMSS) design methods utilises a recursively updated, linear approximation to the STM, which has also been shown to provide a good explanation of measured data from motorways in The Netherlands. Three main categories of control are considered in the paper: ramp metering, variable speed signs and variable message signs.
