Abstract

Applications for up to 16 GW of offshore wind capacity are expected in the UK by the end of 2013, much of it in deep water and exposed sites.
This paper reports on some results of an experimental investigation into the effects of steep waves on offshore wind turbine substructures in 50 to 60 m deep water. The results have been compared to theoretical results generated by a simplified version of the Morison equation. The peak in-line force on a jacket substructure is found to be around 46% lower on average than the equivalent monopile. The non-dimensional wave force is found to decrease with increasing wave number and wave
steepness. The orientation of the jacket structure relative to the wave direction changes the peak wave force by up to 40%.
