Bibliographic note

This paper describes the use of active network techniques to improve the provision of existing network services while enabling the rapid deployment of new services within real networks. Results from one of, if not the first trials of active network routers as a platform within a live service network, carrying normal user traffic are presented. These clearly demonstrate that conventional services can be provisioned using the authors' LARA++ active network system. Further, the results show that new types of service, including optimisations to both existing and emerging protocols, such as Mobile-IPv6, can also be deployed without adversely impacting network performance.
