Abstract

The chapter discusses the contested memory of the First World War. It shows:
- that there was a surprising continuity with prewar ideologies. Political ideologies radicalised and became more intolerant, but the content largely stayed the same.
- why the nationalistic and militaristic memory of the war found much more support than a pacifist one.
