Abstract

This paper explores the phenomenon of shared pigrimage and cult sites in the Holy Land and Egypt in the Middle Ages. Using the evidence primarily of pilgrimage accounts, the paper compares Christian and Muslim veneration of sites recognised by both religious traditions as sacred spaces and examines the strategies deployed in Christian accounts of Muslim veneration to underscore existing ideologies of difference.
