This chapter, drawing on the research and practice of the two authors explores the relationship between volunteering and the concept of community. The focus is on volunteers called compassionate neighbours. They work in East London, England, supporting people who are coming to the end of their life as part of a compassionate community. The stories of three compassionate neighbours are described in this chaptereither in their own words or through a description negotiated with them. How their experience relates to the notion of community is also explored. The chapter considers their broader experiences, and the consequences of being part of a compassionate community. It confirms the impact of such membership-changes in attitude, personal wellbeing and new relationships. Ultimately there is evidence of social and personal transformation on the part of the volunteers.
