This essay proposes a new paradigm for examining Frankish attitudes to and treatment of the indigenous peoples of the Crusader States. Offering a critique of the existing model of 'segregation vs. assimilation', it contributes to the debate through establishing a taxonomy of 'otherness' based on three 12th-13th century western sources deriving from the Crusader States.
