Bibliographic note

Second edition of the classic text. I updated and expanded the argument set out in the original, which is one of the most cited texts in HE research. A search on Google Scholar for the title of the book yielded over 1,300 citations. The book is significant because it maps and explains the distinctive cultural characteristics of the different disciplinary groups in higher education and shows how some of these are tied to the nature of the disciplines within which academics work.
