Abstract

A 3D physical model of an offshore breakwater scheme is to be constructed in the UK Coastal Research Facility at a scale of 1:28. Random, directional sea states and various tidal levels will be generated in the model based on field measurements of specific events. This experiment forms a part of a composite modelling. The paper describes the key aspects of the composite modelling approach with emphasis on the physical model design. Numerical models describing waves and wave induced currents have been used to design the optimum layout. The scaling problems associated with the offshore structures and mobile bed have been also investigated.
