Bibliographic note

Special Individual Circumstances. The exhbition 'Viewfinder' was one half of a two part exhibition held at the Arnolfini Gallery in Bristol. The other exhbition was entitled 'Shimmering Substance'. Viewfinder was curated by Stephen Hepworth and Catsou Roberts and took as its starting point notions of the picturesque and, in particular, theatrical and manufactured images of the landscape. Co exhbitors include Dan Hayes, UK; Patrick Jacobs, US; Clare Langan, Ire; Gianni Motti, I; Dirk Skreber, D. Two of Kanes paintings were included in this exhibition, Contemplating Conservation and View Including Detour. Kane's work demonstrates her interest in early renaissance painting and its simple spatial and narrative devices. This exhibition was widely reviewed in a-n magazine and Contemplating Conservation was on the front cover. To accompany these exhbitions, the full colour catalogue Shimmering Substance/Viewfinder was produced (ISBN 0907738710) which includes an essay by Alex Coles and two texts from dialogues between Roberts and Barry Schwabsky and Roberts and Hepworth. As a result of this exhibtion Kane began to work with the Emily Tsingou Gallery where she still exhibits. The painting Contemplating Conservation was later bought by the Financial Services Authority.
