Abstract

A formal method for the determination of optimum control strategies during production breaks on continuous induction billet heating lines is presented. The method utilizes the calculus of variations to minimize a cost function appropriate to a production run over a time period that includes an interval when heated billets cannot be forged. The solution is obtained as follows: start with an arbitrary control strategy; integrate the state equation forwards along the billet line; determine a boundary condition for the costate at the end of the line; integrate the costate backwards along the line; determine an improved control strategy from the state and costate; and repeat until the performance functional is maximized.
