Bibliographic note

This was specially commissioned as the sole Scottish item for a Festschrift for Sir Rees Davies' which, sadly, became his memorial volume instead. The chapter reflects our Department's commitment to the kind of 'British' history practiced by Davies, and also constitutes the first published output from Grant's long-term research project on medieval Clydesdale, which has received significant financial support from the Department's Lancaster Pamphlets Fund.
