N2 - This article is a response to a comment by Baveye in which he invites me to expand on the use of the word relativism in the context of environmental models. Limitations to a classical statistical approach to model (as realist hypothesis) falsification are discussed. It is concluded that environmental modelling must necessarily be operator dependent and relativist, even while being conducted in a context of pragmatic realism.
