Small-scale anaerobic digestion for the treatment of organic waste: a national study

The feasibility of producing clean energy from small-scale anaerobic digestion units in the United Kingdom has been studied here. Theoretical operational parameters and data from Lancaster University (LU) as well as national population data has also been used within this investigation. Results calculated from small-scale LU data illustrate the significant reduction of greenhouse gases compared with that emitted from a fossil fuel power station. Moreover, analysis on a large-scale national level, found that the constructions of small-scale single anaerobic digestion unit systems ranging between 25 and 100 kWe are likely to be financially viable generating clean electrical energy while reducing CO2 to an environmentally acceptable level.
