T1 - Sustaining networked e-learning through collaborative pedagogies.
AU - McConnell, D.
N1 - This is a chapter in a specially commissioned book examining changes in higher education learning and teaching. The book is in honour of Lewis Elton, with whom all the authors have worked. The chapter makes a strong and innovative contribution to the theory and practice of online teaching. Taking a socio-cultural perspective, the chapter seeks to explain how networked e-learners participate in online learning environments. Traditional face-to-face learning is compared with cooperative and collaborative online learning as a way of addressing the question 'What social engagements and learning processes provide 'proper' contexts for learning?' Theoretical concepts of 'interactivity' and 'participation' are explored with reference to contemporary media studies literature. The chapter explains how these concepts can be used in the design of online, networked learning courses. The assessment of learning in these contexts ' with an emphasis on self and peer assessment - is discussed. RAE_import_type : Chapter in book RAE_uoa_type : Education
