Abstract

The MPEG-7 standard presents several interesting challenges with regard to manipulating multimedia content descriptions. We discuss two exemplary applications for MPEG-7: personalized TV services and video surveillance. In doing so, we introduce some capabilities into the standard that test the limits of the current models, namely those of multiple streams and those of carouseling and synch-points. We then introduce proposed extensions that facilitate these additional functionalities, and explore their impact upon the models within the standard.

This paper, in a journal of high standing, was original and very timely, being the first published examination of some potentially contentious issues, expanding the scope of the then-developing ISO/IEC MPEG standard. Lancaster's reported work strongly informed the standard because Adam Lindsay worked as a co-editor of the final stages of MPEG-7 Systems standardisation, making the various technology contributions coherent. The publication and the underlying contributions of Lancaster to the MPEG-7 Systems architecture have had an ongoing impact, since the same architecture formed the backbone of the architecture for MPEG-21 Systems.
