Abstract

New Communication Genre is a program of research established by the Socio-Digital Systems Group at Microsoft Research in Cambridge, UK, to better understand the relationship between technology and human expression. Currently, the program is exploring ways to integrate existing technologies to encourage novel forms of interaction. One such system is Homenote that allows person-to-place text messaging. It copmbines SMS technology with the ability to create messages using a stylus. Another system is Touchtalk, a messaging system that allows users to convey a range of emotions through graphics representations and tactile input and output mechanisms. Like Homenote, Touchtalk is a vehicle for exploring and helping to create the resources for users to evolve their own endeavors.
