Being Black: History in a Box

Project: Other

Description

Part of the Research in a Box initiative (initial round), this was a study of the slave inventories and notebooks of an 18th-century plantation-owner in St Kitts and Montserrat, to teach the impact of slavery and the legacy of slavery within the schools curriculum.

Key findings

That slavery is very little taught in schools, and when it is, it is largely the Slave Trade which is taught and little attention is paid to encouraging students to think about the impact and legacy of slavery in the UK. Teachers are bound by the National Curriculum and reluctant to step outside it. The gap between schools education and what is done in universities was highlighted.
