Child Proofing the Internet of Things

Project: Other

Description

This project explores the privacy and security implications of developing IoT platforms for children – focusing specifically on platforms that include children as active contributors to the Internet of Things. Exploring the BBC micro:bit as an example IoT platform that has been designed to be programmable by children, we will draw out the current and anticipated threats associated with enabling children to program IoT devices. We will use these insights to develop a) specific advice for the development of programming components needed to ensure the privacy and security of users of the micro:bit itself, as well as b) more broadly applicable advice for developing programmable IoT devices for children in the form of policy briefing documents, developer guidelines, and public facing project videos.
