Queering Spanish folklore: a two days Jota festival

Project: Other

Description

Jota music originated in the 18th century. It is a patrimonial symbol and marker of cultural identity in many regions of Spain. Its lyrics deal with love, religion and patriotism, (re)producing androcentric and (hetero)normative imperatives around gender. These imperatives are also embodied in Jota movements and choreographies. Yet, there is little research and practice that explores how a feminist/queer reading can explore a wider spectrum of identities, experiences and creative artistic expressions. This award will fund a two days Queer Jota Festival designed to increase gender awareness, showcase subaltern writings/performances and establish a network of Jota practitioners and heritage professionals.
