Revolting Subjects : Marginalisation and Resistance

Project: Research

Description

`Revolting Subjects: Marginalisation and Resistance in Contemporary Britain' will examine the relationship between representations, subjectivities and inequalities. It will focus on four abject cultural figures and the stigmatized populations which lie in their shadow: unemployed youths (chavs), asylum seekers, gypsys and travellers, and anarchists. It will examine how these figures accrue meaning as they travel through popular and public culture and, drawing on ethnographic data, it will investigate how dehumanising representations are negotiated and resisted. This interdisciplinary project aims to provide a rich psycho-social account of social abjection and revolt in a context in which social inequalities have been naturalised.
