Rewilding the Night: Co-developing nature-inclusive lighting

Project: Research

Description

Nights are a critical time and space for cities, yet their role in envisioning and realizing sustainable urban futures is often overlooked. Rewilding the Night initiates an experimental
research project that brings together an interdisciplinary team of collaborators to investigate the future of cities after dark. The project has three goals:
▪ Build an international research collaboration through a co-creation process that develops strategies for utilising sensors and data analysis to make legible nighttime environments.
This will be done through the prototyping and field-testing of sensors and data collection in the Botanical Gardens of the University of Bonn.
▪ Raise awareness about the impacts of light pollution through exploring how we can invite people to engage with, and ultimately value, urban darkness. This will be done
through the interpretation and communication of collected data.
▪ As a long-term goal, offer new directions for urban lighting through developing dark design strategies that utilises sensor data to align urban lighting with natural rhythms
and urban biodiversity.
