Subjects of the Child Protection Process: Why Do Some Parents Succeed and Others Struggle?

Project: Research

Description

New Beginnings is a community project designed to work with parents whose children are subject to the child protection process. Inspired by the research conducted by Dr Jadwiga Leigh and the support of Dr Lisa Warwick, the project was founded in 2018. It has been referred to as a successful, intense and individualised programme of support. 20 of the 26 parents who have participated, no longer have social care intervention. However, despite the project’s success, not every parent who engages with New Beginnings remains with their children at the end. This study aims to understand why some parents manage to remove themselves from the child protection process whilst others struggle to do so. By capturing the stories of parents who do and do not make it through the child protection process we will use the findings to improve practice and support new parents who enter the child protection process.
