Transition metal oxides as electrocatalysts for energy storage through electrolysis

Project: Research

Description

Transition metal oxides are used as electrode materials in rechargeable batteries. They catalyse surface reactions in those batteries, but in that context those reactions are considered parasitic side reactions. The huge variety of chemistries and nano/microstructures created of those oxide materials, however, has sparked increasing interest in transferring them to applications in electrolysers and fuel cells, where they could become economically feasible replacements of platinum metals.
