Exile as a Place of Emptiness: Los Hispanomexicanos Dr Eduardo TASIS (University of Central Lancashire) Los hipanomexicanos are part of the second generation of the Spanish republican exile in México. Having left Spain at an early age, their experience of exile significantly differs from that of their parents. With very little recollection of their country of origin and educated in a Spanish environment that impelled a constant remembering of the republican Spain, these writers had the difficult task of writing about something they never got to know. This paper will examine the presence of this emptiness in their poetry and En el balcón vacío, a film directed by one of the members of this generation, José María García Ascot. Propagandising Lorca: Spanish Cinema and TV in the 80’s Dr Luis Pascual CORDERO SÁNCHEZ (University of Manchester) A variety of films and TV series by Carlos Saura, Jaime Camino, Mario Camus, and Juan Antonio Bardem transformed García Lorca into a new Spanish democratic symbol in the 80’s, following the demystification of Francoist historical referents, such as the Catholic Monarchs or Columbus. This paper will analyse the political and cinematic aspects of that boom experienced by García Lorca’s figure, making him not only a paramount model of anti-dictatorship political criticism, but also the trigger factor of alternative sexualities, left wing politics, and historical memory as emerging topics in the study of Spanish culture.
