Activity: Talk or presentation typesInvited talk

6/01/2021

Invited speaker for the January 2021 monthly meeting of the Active Travel Postgraduate Network, during which I presented my research and led an activity. ~~~ Nikki Pugh is an artist and 2nd year PhD researcher at Lancaster University. Working in the area of Art & Mobilities she is exploring the interactions that come from engaging with the materiality of cycle repair in communal, convivial settings, particularly with reference to provision for people who are not the cis-gender men typically centred by UK cycling policies and cultures. Whilst the coronavirus pandemic has proven to be a challenging time to initiate participatory activities, it has also highlighted the role that physical objects can play in animating conversations about cycling practices and the extent to which effective teaching of cycle repair skills to beginners is reliant on the mobility of tools, even when the movement of the participants is restricted. In this presentation Nikki will share work in progress and some of the observations coming out of her early work with Everyday Superpowers (a network supporting trans people, non-binary people and allied women to use cycling more as part of their everyday practices).
