Managing Public Sociology and an Academic Career: a workshop
Workshop

Speaker and Workshop Organiser: Professor Karen O’Reilly (Loughborough University)

Discussants: Dr Aaron Winter (Lancaster University) and Dr Paul Jones (University of Liverpool)

“How can we meaningfully bring wider publics into conversations about the value of sociological thinking and make sociology matter in the world today?”

This workshop aims to answer that question. It will be structured around a set of questions to discuss and to share insights. 1) How can we best communicate our work beyond academia) 2) How are sociological insights searched for and located? 3) What is the role of key take-away messages and memorable concepts in our work? 4) How can we make, find and cite alternative outputs such as podcasts and YouTube videos, blog posts and conference presentations? The workshop will be interactive, with attendees invited to bring along their own examples, questions and solutions. The speakers also hope for input from attendees who have experience with using and citing creative outputs, and who are good at disseminating and advertising their work.
