Paths of Enslavement, Routes to Freedom: Slavery and Mobility in the Iberian Atlantic World
Activity: Participating in or organising an event types › Participation in conference - Academic
This workshop aims to connect some of the rich historiography of slavery in the Iberian Atlantic world to the fields of spatial and mobilities histories. Drawing on Black geographies, mobilities studies, and environmental history, papers explore how both the power to move enslaved people, and enslaved contestatory mobility and place-making, constructed and contested the spaces of slavery and freedom. A concluding roundtable explores how Latin American archive sources, which reveal enslaved people’s creative, resistive spatial strategies, can be curated, disseminated, and used for teaching in schools and universities in the UK and Latin America.
