Shadow Play: Liberation and Exhilaration in the Mancunian Night

Where now for the secret, the contemplative, the quiet and subterranean in our cities? The question may no longer be what spaces we wish to engage with but when are they? Join Professor Nick Dunn on one of his nocturnal expeditions. The nocturnal city is a place and time within which escape from the measures and restrictions of the daytime is possible. More specifically, it is a state of being. Over the last few years Nick Dunn has spent many, many hours exploring this city, his home, at night. During this time he has experimented with numerous methods for map making and documenting his experiences. Some of his maps, notations, sketches and photographs can be seen in the Loitering With Intent exhibition. This work considers the contemporary city as a series of systems, flows and processes, and is explored through experimentation which addresses the nature of urban space: its perception, demarcation and appropriation. Nick is interested in walking as a cultural practice, the politics of space and the right to the city.
