Much recent press in the UK (e.g. BBC, 2014; Daily Mail, 2014; The Guardian, 2014) has called for legislation against the growing problem of ‘revenge porn’: the action of someone posting explicit images of others online to humiliate them. Given women’s social status tends to be tied to chastity and modesty they are particularly vulnerable when their private life is made public. In this paper we discursively analyse men’s electronic texts accompanying their posting of explicit images. Situating our analysis in current debates pornography, gender-based violences and information and communication technologies literature we show the complex ways in which masculinities are invoked by men to account for their practices. The implications for the use of ICTs, social media and gender violence are discussed.
