I helped Louise Mullagh and Justin Larner plan, co-organise, and deliver the Digital Economy Network's (DEN) Tiree Tech Wave 2016 trip. Our CfP for "Exploring Common Values: diving deeply into the digital frontier" follows: Would you like to explore the impact of remote locations on people technology and values, by joining us for 5 days at one of Scotland’s most remote and beautiful locations, the Hebridean island of Tiree? This is a unique opportunity for DEN researchers to spend 5 nights (8th-13th October) on the beautiful island of Tiree to explore nature, people and technology and expand our skills as collaborative researchers. We have chosen Tiree as it will offer us the opportunity to engage with island life and explore how people work together around shared values in a unique situation to make things of value with and for that community. The project will coincide with and involve attending the Tiree Techwave, a unique event that offers hands on exploration and making with participants including artists, developers, islanders and researchers in a variety of academic and industry fields. The projects we will work on are yet to be formulated, but once we have selected participants we will work with Professor Alan Dix in organising suitable workshops. Our aims for the project are: To develop a greater understanding into the impact remote locations have upon people, technology and what matters to them (their values). The workshop will be based around several projects (tbc) and will develop our skills relating to collaborative research projects. During our stay we will hold a workshop (or several smaller workshops) with islanders to explore the impact of the remote environment on their values and relationships with technology. By staying together in two nearby cottages we aim to create a temporary research community that acts as a starting point for collaboration and research outputs, but also to enable students to have time to think, write and explore the island.
